History & Purpose
The Association of Community Retailers (ACR) grew out of the former Stay Displays coalition of retailers from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Nelson, Timaru and other places around New Zealand who wanted to put retailers’ views to the public and our elected officials about their concerns over proposals to ban tobacco displays from our members’ shops.
In the last few years, however, rights of retailers and our views and concerns about many issues have come to light. This includes sales of alcohol, confectionary and other products; safety and security concerns and other issues.
The ACR is a self-funding organisation from members’ subscriptions. Our goals and objectives are to support and promote the rights of New Zealand’s independent retailers. Membership is voluntary and open to all retailers, FMCG enterprises and individuals.
Goals and Objectives
The Association of Community Retailers represents the views of retailers on the wide range of issues and concerns affecting them and publicise these views to the New Zealand public, Parliamentarians and the wider membership.
The ACR ensures its members are kept informed of political and bureaucratic developments that may affect the environment in which they operate their business. It does this through direct contact with members, a quarterly newsletter posted to members and displayed on the ACR website, and through circulating information through stakeholders and this website.
The ACR ensures that New Zealand’s Parliamentarians are aware of the goals and objectives of the organisation and its members, and meets with MPs to explain the views of retailers.
